The Pitt Panthers come into the 2023 season looking to get back to the ACC Championship game that they last won in 2021. That will be a more difficult task as the ACC has done away with divisions. Now, the top two teams will play each other for the ACC Championship. Below is the 2023 Pitt schedule, and my prediction for each game.
9/2 vs Wofford Win
Wofford College, which is located in Spartanburg, SC, is Pitt’s warm-up game. An FCS team, the Panthers should have no trouble with them.
9/9 vs Cincinnati Win
Cincy makes the jump to the Big 12 this season and will struggle on offense. Pitt should make enough plays on the Bearcat defense to secure the win, and take the River City Rivalry Trophy.
9/16 @ West Virginia Win
The first road test for Pitt is the Backyard Brawl. WVU only returns 10 starters, and the physical Pitt rushing attack will prevail.
9/23 vs North Carolina Loss
The Tar Heels and quarterback Drake Maye will be too much for Pitt to handle, even at home. Pitt will keep it close thanks to UNC’s defense, but the Tar Heels will get it done.
9/30 @ Virginia Tech Win
The Hokies are still trying to rebuild under coach Brent Pry. Pitt should have no trouble in this road tilt.
10/14 vs Louisville Win
Jeff Brohm was finally lured to coach his alma mater. The installation of his offense will take time. Pitt will get the win at home.
10/21 @ Wake Forest Win
Wake is replacing star quarterback Sam Hartman - a huge hole to fill. The offense only returns five starters, and I don’t think they’ll score enough against Pitt’s defense.
10/28 @ Notre Dame Loss
Notre Dame landed Sam Hartman from the transfer portal. The Panthers should get some push against the Irish defensive front, but the Irish will prevail.
11/4 vs Florida State Loss
The Seminoles are primed for a CFP push. The weapons on offense are just too much for Pitt’s defense to handle.
11/11 vs Syracuse Win
This game is being played at Yankee Stadium. Syracuse has suffered a lot of turnover on their roster and coaching staff. Pitt will get the win easily.
11/18 vs Boston College Win
Senior day will see quarterback Phil Jurkovec against his former team. The Eagles are struggling under coach Jeff Haffley and Pitt should win their final home game.
11/25 @ Duke Win
Duke had a magical season under first year head coach Mike Elko. That magic will not follow the Blue Devils into season two. Pitt wins this one easily to close out the season.
Final regular season record: 9-3
With a relatively easy schedule, I see Pitt finishing third in the ACC, falling just short of playing for the ACC Championship. Pitt should get into a decent bowl game thanks to the nine wins in the regular season.
