2024 Wazzu Football Schedule Released

Wazzu Football Schedule

The Wazzu Football schedule for 2024 has been released and will feature a whole new look as the Pac-12 Conference (consisting of Washington State and Oregon State) has announced a scheduling alliance with the Mountain West Conference. The seven-plus-one model means each of the 10 MWC teams will play seven conference games plus one against either WSU or OSU. The only familiar foes will be Washington (in the annual Apple Cup game) and Oregon State (the defacto Pac-2 Championship game).

2024 Wazzu Football Schedule Features Big Changes

The days of playing Oregon, USC or Arizona State are over as the Big Ten Conference and Big 12 Conference picked apart the Pac-12 and left Cal and Stanford to flee to the Atlantic Coast Conference. To remain relevant, the Pac-2 have done the impossible as they fought off the "treacherous 10" in court and filled a football schedule, with only the daunting task of getting the Pac-12 back up to eight teams to retain its conference identity. Below is a breakdown of the schedule with a quick comment about each game as I intend to do more in-depth pieces as Spring Ball results come in.

'PreSeason'

Aug. 31, Portland State, TBD (Home): Usually considered a "tune-up" game, always be on the lookout for an early "Coug." Last meeting: Sept. 11, 2021, at home, with a WSU win 44-24. WSU leads the series 3-1.

Sept. 7, Texas Tech, TBD (Home): Can't find a record in our database, but the Tech database indicates Cougars have played the Red Raiders twice and lost both. Winsipedia confirms the 0-2 standing with the largest margin of victory coming in a 28-10 by Texas Tech in 1964.

Sept. 14, Washington, TBD (Away): The last meeting was Nov. 25 in Seattle where WSU lost a close one 24-21. The Cougars trail in this series 33-75-6. Lumen Field Neutral? Pack the place! An early Apple Cup!

Mountain West Rivalries in the Making?

Sept. 21, San Jose State, TBD (Home): The last meeting was Sept. 18, 2018, in Pullman, with the Cougs winning 31-0. WSU leads the series 8-4-1.

Sept. 28, Boise State, TBD (Away): The last meeting was Sept. 9, 2017, at home. The Cougars pulled off a 47-44 win and lead the series 5-1.

Oct. 5: Bye

Oct. 12, Fresno State, TBD (Away): The last meeting was Dec. 17, 2022, in the LA Bowl where the Cougars were humbled by FSU 29-6. WSU leads this series 3-2.

Oct 19, Hawaii, TBD (Home): The last meeting was Dec. 12, 2009, in Seattle with Hawaii getting their first BCS victory 38-20. WSU trails in this series 1-3.

Oct. 26, San Diego State, TBD (Away): The last meeting was Sept. 11, 2017, in San Diego with the Aztecs snapping a 19-game losing streak to Pac-12 schools 42-24. The series tied 1-1.

Nov. 30, Wyoming, TBD (Home): The last meeting was Sept. 1, 2018, in Wyoming with a 41-19 victory for Wazzu. The Cougars lead the series 5-2.

2024 Wazzu Football Schedule Preview/Review

This certainly isn't a "give me" type of schedule, but it is doable. Offseason question marks, such as who will be the next quarterback will certainly be answered this spring. Does what led to the breakdown last year after the 4-0 start still linger? All game times are TBD at this time, is there a TV contract in place? As the Pac-2 struggles for survival, you can check out the case made here for Washington State, or is there a Mountain West merger in the making and a rebirth of the Pac-12?
