Elite running back Donovan Johnson has committed to play for the Michigan Wolverines.

Donovan Johnson's Background

Johnson is a four-star running back from the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. On Sunday, Johnson announced his commitment to the University of Michigan, choosing the Wolverines over other top programs including Alabama, Ohio State and USC.

Johnson's recruitment process was intense, with over 40 offers from prestigious schools. Running backs coach Tony Alford hosted Johnson during a recent visit to Michigan. The visit influenced Johnson's decision to commit. Indeed, he told On3 Sports that he "just couldn’t leave and not commit" due to the genuine family atmosphere he felt in Ann Arbor.

According to the major recruiting services, Johnson is highly regarded:

  • On3 Sports: four-star

  • 247Sports: four-star

  • ESPN: four-star

  • Rivals: four-star

In addition to his football prowess, Johnson is also an accomplished track athlete. He qualified for the AAU Junior Olympics and boasts impressive track times. As a high school freshman, he ran the 200-meter dash in 22.47 seconds and the 400-meter dash in 51.58 seconds.

Impact for Michigan

Johnson is the second running back in the Wolverines' 2025 recruiting class, joining three-star Jasper Parker. His addition strengthens Michigan's overall 2025 class. Per On3, the Maize and Blue's 2025 class ranks No. 13 nationally and No. 4 in the Big Ten Conference.

Prediction of Johnson’s Role at Michigan

Senior RBs Donovan Edwards and Tavierre Dunlap and graduate student RB Kalel Mullings will likely depart following the 2024 season. The Wolverines will then need to rely on emerging talent in their backfield. The up-and-comers in the running backs room include Cole Cabana, Benjamin Hall and 2024 recruits Jordan Marshall and Micah Ka’apana. Marshall and Ka’apana are both anticipated to make significant impacts early in their collegiate careers, with Marshall regarded as one of the top running backs in the country.

Given Johnson's impressive athletic profile and track record, it's likely that he will have the ability to contribute immediately to Michigan's backfield. He brings a combination of size, speed and athleticism that could allow him to make an early impact. However, Michigan's depth at the running back position includes several talented players. Thus, Johnson might initially share carries or be utilized in specific situations that leverage his speed and versatility.

If he adapts quickly to the college game and excels in fall camp, Johnson could see significant playing time as a freshman. Otherwise, he might spend his first season developing his skills, learning the playbook and adjusting to the physical demands of college football. In either scenario, Johnson's talent suggests he will soon become a key contributor to Michigan's offense.

Scouting Report on Johnson

Johnson is an elite four-star running back renowned for his impressive size-speed combination. He is 6-foot-1 and weighs 220 pounds. His physicality matches his track background, underscoring his exceptional athleticism. He has demonstrated the ability to break away in open space and power through arm tackles, showcasing both speed and strength on the field. His explosive capabilities, high-end athleticism and impressive football IQ make him a versatile and dynamic player. As a highly regarded recruit, Johnson is poised to make a significant impact at Michigan, contributing immediately to the Wolverines' backfield with his unique blend of size, speed, and agility.
