Coastal Carolina gets put into the record books while beating Texas State at home 31-23.
A simple forward pitch is all that would be needed to put Sam Pinckney into college football history. With that simple catch, he broke the NCAA record for most consecutive games with a reception, making a catch for the 55th straight game. The record was previously held by Central Michigan’s Bryan Anderson, who played for the Chippewas from 2006-09.
The defense for Coastal was dominant during the middle of the game, holding Texas State to only seven yards of total offense in the second and third quarters.
Texas State got on the board first in the first drive of the game, capping off a nine-play, 75-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run by Jahmyl Jeter. The Chanticleers would answer with a nine-play, 70-yard drive capped off by a four-yard touchdown pass from Ethan Vasko to Kendall Karr. Texas State would answer with a field goal after driving the ball down to Coastal’s 23.
The Chants would control the second quarter, scoring twice while holding Texas State to no points. Their first drive of the quarter was a ten-play, 82-yard drive finished off with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Vasko to Sam Pinckney to retake the lead. After forcing Texas State to punt, the Chants would capitalize on their next drive as well, with Vasko leading the team down the field for an 11-play, 70-yard drive finished off by a six-yard touchdown run by Braydon Bennett.
The second half would start the way the first half ended, with Coastal taking seven minutes and 44 seconds to drive 94 yards for a touchdown, the Chanticleer's longest drive of the season both in terms of yards and time.
The fourth quarter would be all Texas State, with the Bobcats doing their best to come back from being down by 21. They would recover an onside kick and score twice to cut the lead to a one-possession game with 45 seconds left in the game. In spite of their best effort, however, the second onside kick attempt would be recovered by Sam Pinckney to seal the win for Coastal.
The Chanticleers will travel to West Point to face Army next week.
