On Thursday, Aug. 1, the Wuerffel Foundation and Allstate announced the official Wuerffel Trophy Watch List. Army Black Knights senior defensive lineman Dre Miller made the watch list for this coveted award. The Wuerffel Trophy is the most prestigious community service award in college football.

Wuerffel Trophy

The mission of the Wuerffel Trophy is to honor and celebrate the impact of the players who serve others in their communities. The Wuerffel Foundation hopes that this award will inspire others to follow suit. To be considered for this award, players must have verified and documented community service, preferably have a GPA over 3.0 and achieve excellence on the field. Players will receive extra consideration for making All-America or All-Conference teams.

The Wuerffel Trophy was named after Florida Gators quarterback Danny Wuerffel. He was a national champion and Heisman Trophy winner for the Gators in 1996. He is recognized for his humanitarian works. The inaugural award was given to LSU offensive lineman Rudy Niswanger in 2005. Last year's winner was wide receiver Ladd McConkey from the University of Georgia.

Miller is a 6-foot-3, 265-pound DL from Savannah, Ga. He played in nine games in 2023 and recorded 7 tackles and recovered 1 fumble. Miller missed three games due to injury in the middle of the season. Following a head-to-head collision in the Syracuse game, Miller had to be carted off the field and taken to the hospital. He tallied 3 tackles in last year's finale against Navy. He is the only player from a service academy to be named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List.

Miller has been noted for his community service efforts with the Boys and Girls Club of America and Teens for Literacy. In July 2024, Miller and head coach Jeff Monken were nominated to the Allstate and American Football Coaches Association's Good Works Team. The Good Works Team is a roster of 22 players and one head coach who have demonstrated an above-average desire to serve others off the field. Monken has been nominated for the second consecutive season.

Miller played in two games in 2022 and registered 1 tackle. He is a defense and strategic studies major at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and he spent the 2020 season at the United States Military Academy Prep School. Miller is expected to be a bigger contributor this season for the Black Knights defense. Army was ranked in the top third of FBS teams for points allowed per game in 2023.

Army went 6-6 last season, ending the year with a four-game win streak. That winning streak began with a 23-3 thumping of the Air Force Falcons. Army beat Navy 17-11 in their season finale to win the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy.

The Black Knights will begin their 2024 season with a matchup against Lehigh on Aug. 30 at home at Michie Stadium. This year will also be Army's first as a member of the American Athletic Conference. The Black Knights began training camp on Tuesday, July 30.
