Week 2 of Big 12 Conference football has come to a close, and it did not disappoint. We saw dogfights, blowouts and near upsets. With the conclusion of an epic Week 2, the Big 12 has announced its Players of the Week. Each individual who received honors perfectly encapsulated this week of Big 12 football.
For the Big 12 Player of the Week awards, the conference chooses offensive, defensive, special teams and newcomer players to celebrate. In Week 1, the performances of Tetairoa McMillan (Arizona), Trey Rucker (Oklahoma State), Drae McCray (Texas Tech) and Brendan Sorsby (Cincinnati) were selected as Players of the Week. For Week 2, we got a brand new slate.
Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week
RB Cam Skattebo, Arizona State
Running back Cam Skattebo was a workhorse for the Arizona State Sun Devils (2-0) against the Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-1) in Week 2. Skattebo got downfield plenty, racking up 262 yards on 33 carries. With this performance. Skattebo put the Big 12 on watch, showing that he can be a big threat to any defense.
After the Sun Devils have been a disappointment the last few years, they look much improved through the season's first two weeks. With wins against the Southeastern Conference's Mississippi State and the Wyoming Cowboys (0-2), Skattebo and the Sun Devils' offense are trending in the right direction. Skattebo will look to repeat his Player of the Week-worthy performance against Texas State (2-0).
Defensive Player of the Week
LB Nick Martin, Oklahoma State
The No. 13 Oklahoma State Cowboys (2-0) have had the Defensive Player of the Week twice in a row. Last week, safety Trey Rucker got the nod. This week, linebacker Nick Martin earned the spot. The Cowboys were in a battle with the Arkansas Razorbacks (1-1) in Week 2, and Martin played a major part in winning the fight. Martin flew around on defense, racking up 16 total tackles, 8 solo and 8 assisted.
Martin's Defensive Player of the Week level of play was much needed as the Cowboys beat the Razorbacks 39-31 in two overtimes. Looking forward, the Cowboys will face the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (1-1) in Week 3. While Martin was impressive, the Cowboys hope they don't need a second superhero performance to beat Tulsa.
Special Teams Player of the Week
Placekicker Kyle Konrardy, Iowa State
The No. 21 Iowa State Cyclones (2-0) have picked up a lot of recognition this week, both in The Associated Press Top 25 Poll and the Big 12. Placekicker Kyle Konrardy earned the Special Teams Player of the Week for the Big 12 as the Cyclones beat their rival and formerly ranked Iowa Hawkeyes in the Cy-Hawk matchup.
Konrardy went 2-for-2 on extra points and 2-for-3 on field goals, nailing one from 54 yards out. For Week 3, the Cyclones will look to get some well-earned rest with the bye but get right back at it on Sept. 28 against the Arkansas State Red Wolves. With the Big 12 being as wide open as it is, having a kicker you can rely on is always a handy tool.
Newcomer Player of the Week
Defensive End Obi Ezeigbo, Oklahoma State
Defensive end Obi Ezeigbo makes it three Cowboys selected as Big 12 Player of the Week through the first two weeks. The conference newcomer also put on a show for the Cowboys' defense, having transferred from Division II Gannon University. While facing Arkansas, Ezeigbo came up with 9 total tackles and 2 major sacks.
The Cowboys are one of the Big 12's best. If they want to continue to be, then their defensive stoppers Rucker, Martin and Ezeigbo are going to have to play great. Through two weeks, they have done just that. While Oklahoma State should take care of business against Tulsa in Week 3, their defensive stars will have to show up big against the No. 12 Utah Utes (2-0) in Week 4.
The Big 12 is heating up, and as we get closer to league play, you won't want to miss any of the action. Stay tuned in here at College Football Dawgs for more Big 12 coverage.
