Coastal Carolina pulls off the upset over Appalachian State on a walk-off field goal. The 27-24 victory gives Tim Beck the first Sun Belt win of his career and the Chants their first win at Kidd Brewer Stadium in program history.
The game was a tale of momentum, with both teams seemingly taking control of the game at different points. Coastal started the game off strong, scoring 14 unanswered points in the first quarter on 83-yard and 63-yard drives. App State would get their first points early on in the second quarter on a Michael Hughes 29-yard field goal. The Chanticleers would answer with a 33-yard field goal of their own. App State would then take the momentum toward the end of the first half and the beginning of the second, scoring two unanswered touchdowns to tie the game. Each team would trade one more touchdown, leading to the final game-winning drive for Coastal Carolina. The drive would start courtesy of a fumble recovered by Abraham Temoney. On the first play of App State's drive, the Mountaineers went deep, looking to score quickly. The pass was caught by Milan Tucker but then knocked out at the Coastal 20 by Keonte Lusk and recovered by Temoney. The Chanticleers would take control of the clock, running the ball on nine of ten plays in the final drive. Their methodical approach would lead to the walk-off, game-winning 24-yard field goal by Kade Hensley.
Play of the Game: Lusk forced fumble & recovery by Temoney.
Coastal MVP: Grayson McCall; McCall passed for 373 yards and two touchdowns on 19-28 passing
App State MVP: Joey Aguilar; Aguilar threw for 305 yards and two touchdowns on 18-31 passing
What It Means For Coastal Carolina:
The Chanticleers get back on track in the Sun Belt following their rough first two games to start conference play. They also get a statement win over a strong App State team who looked to be the Chanticleers toughest opponents going into the season. This win gives the Chanticleers confidence going into the remainder of their Sun Belt schedule.
What It Means For Appalachian State:
This loss puts the Mountaineers further behind the eight ball in the Sun Belt East, now falling to 1-1 in conference play and not having a strong win to give them confidence and momentum going deeper into conference play.
