Former Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler agreed to a two-year deal worth up to $11.43 million with the Washington Commanders during the opening day of NFL free agency. The Chargers agreed to bring in former Baltimore Ravens runningback Gus Edwards which left the door open for Ekeler to sign elsewhere.

Down Year

Ekeler had a down season in 2023 due to injuries but was extremely productive the two years prior. He can be a multi-faceted tailback who is dangerous out of the backfield. He has career totals of 440 catches for 3,884 yards and 30 receiving touchdowns. He was also dynamite rushing the ball with 990 career rushes for 4,335 yards and 39 rushing touchdowns.

Keeping Austin Ekeler Healthy

The Commanders were on the lookout for another playmaker in the runningback room after former third-round pick, Antonio Gibson agreed to terms with the New England Patriots. This is a great fit as Ekeler can take over the third down and receiving back role for the Commanders. It could also be a move to allow Ekeler, age 28, a chance to be more productive while staying healthy.
