The NFL recently announced the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers will face off in Week 1 of the 2024 season in São Paulo, Brazil.

The game will be the first of its kind for the NFL, as a regular season game has never been played in South America. The Brazil game was announced last December, but no details on the teams involved and the exact date were shared until today.

The game is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 6, at the Corinthians Arena, home of the Brazilian SC Corinthians soccer team. The Eagles are the designated home team, and the NFL announced that Peacock would have the exclusive streaming rights for the matchup.

Why Does This Game Matter?

The game comes at a point where it is no secret that the NFL is looking to expand its market. Since 2005, the league has played games internationally in Mexico, Germany, the United Kingdom and Canada. In the past, the league had also played exhibition games in Japan, Ireland, Spain, Australia and Sweden.

The São Paulo game is part of the 2024 NFL International Games, while the other four games take place in Europe. The league and both organizations are excited to be part of history, as Brazil has established a solid football fanbase.

“With over 35 million passionate fans in Brazil, the Friday night 2024 regular season opener in São Paulo will bring incredible energy—marking a historic moment for our sport internationally,” said NFL International managing Director Gerrit Meier.

With this game and other international games being announced and scheduled, we can expect even more to be announced in the future.
