Florida State kicks off its 2024 season in Dublin, Ireland on August 24 against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. All eyes will be on coach Mike Norvell and the Seminoles this year as they look to repeat as Atlantic Coast Conference champions.

Last year's dominating defensive effort in the ACC Championship Game against Louisville was not enough to sway the College Football Playoff Committee to put the Seminoles in there.

Along with last year's CFP exclusion, a lot of talk at ACC Media Days included Florida State's potential exit from the conference. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips had some interesting comments regarding the Seminoles' pending lawsuit. Norvell, instead, chose to focus on the upcoming season. He talked about his players' willingness to embrace the challenges that await in 2024.

Home Grown Talent

Florida State's representation in Charlotte, N.C., for Media Days included defensive tackle Josh Farmer, edge rusher Patrick Payton and offensive lineman Darius Washington. All 3 players were recruited and developed out of high school by Norvell and Florida State. This signals to conference foes and the country that Norvell does not solely rely on the Transfer Portal.

Upholding the Florida State Standard

Farmer spoke about how the defensive linemen rotation will keep the Seminoles fresh. He's also excited to play with high school teammate Darrell Jackson. Farmer also shared his definition of Florida State's standard defense. "Running to the ball every play, being tough, being smart...resilient," he said.

Payton talked about how he is elevating his game this season. "Be the best me I can be, in the classroom, getting treatment and basically learning how to be a pro," he said. "It all matters."

Payton learned leadership lessons from former Seminole defenders Jermaine Johnson and Jared Verse, each of whom were first-round NFL Draft picks. He said Verse had an edge and was always the first one in and last one out from practice and film sessions.

Washington spoke about his relationship with incoming transfer quarterback DJ Uiagalelei. He talked about the QB's unselfish nature and buy-in to the team and Seminole culture. "He can make an impact by the way he works," Washington said. In regard to being a "Swiss army knife" along the offensive line, Washington said it doesn't matter where he lines up, he just wants to help the team win.

Farmer, Payton and Washington all spoke to media members. But they also were able to enjoy some time on the sticks with EA Sports College Football 2025.
