Four-star linebacker Christian Gass announced his commitment on July 20 to the Tennessee Volunteers. Gass, a linebacker from Covington, Ga., attended Eastside High School entering his senior season and has a composite score of 91.07, according to 247Sports.

Gass received 21 offers during his recruiting process before narrowing it down to his final three schools: Georgia, Tennessee and USC.

What Christian Gass Was Looking For

Gass, heading into commitment day, did an interview with On3’s Chad Simmons about what he is looking for in selecting a program to play at.

"The people are definitely a big factor, going to each school," Gass said. "There’s some I’ve been to once, some I’ve been to a couple times. The people I could tell are real genuine. On top of that, the coaches at each program are all coaches I feel like I could learn from. Those are all coaches that not only care about football, but care about me as a person. That’s what’s really big to me,”

Heading into commitment day, On3’s crystal ball of his three finalists ranked Tennessee as the overall favorite, with a probability of commitment of 91.3 percent.

"My big thing was they have real, genuine love, too," Gass said of Tennessee. "Coach (Mike Ekeler), he’s definitely an energy guy. He’s big on energy and told me each and every day that I was a priority and I was important to him, not only as a player but as a person. He really just sits there and watches everything I do and that’s big for me. Going up there and watching film, knowing I can go through their schemes and that I can really understand that, that’s a big thing for me.”

In his junior season, Gass had 68 tackles, 11 of which were for loss, with 2 sacks and a forced fumble. His performance on the field last year earned him honors as Atlanta Journal-Constitution honorable mention. He was also an All-Cov News first team selection on defense.

The Impact of Gass Committing to Tennessee

Gass already adds to a strong 2025 class heading to Rocky Top with 18 commitments. At the moment, the Volunteers have 10 four-star recruits in addition to eight three-star recruits for Josh Heupel.

Tennessee's 2025 recruiting class currently ranks 10th in the nation and fifth in the SEC with still months to go before early signing day in December.
