The SMU Mustangs are loading up their 2025 recruiting class. The Ponies have landed their third four-star recruit in July. The most recent commitment is particularly sweet for the Mustangs as they have flipped coveted quarterback Ty Hawkins from rival TCU.

Although Hawkins pledged to TCU last summer, he has now decided to leave Sonny Dykes' program in Fort Worth and head across the Metroplex to join Rhett Lashlee's squad in Dallas. After Mustangs QB pledge Keelon Russell flipped to Alabama on June 4, momentum picked up for Hawkins to join SMU. Another relevant factor is that Hawkins' sister ran track for SMU.

On3 rates Hawkins as the No. 87 overall player in the 2025 recruiting cycle, the No. 9 quarterback, and the No. 18 player from the Lone Star State.

Hawkins received offers from Oregon, Ole Miss, and other traditional college football stalwarts.

Lashlee and quarterbacks coach D’Eriq King pursued Hawkins relentlessly. Even after he pledged to TCU, they were in contact with him almost daily.

Ty Hawkins Bio, Stats

Hawkins is a dual-threat QB, who has racked up over 2,000 rushing yards at the prep level. He began his high school career as a wide receiver at Claudia Taylor "Lady Bird" Johnson High School in San Antonio, Texas, but transitioned to QB as a sophomore. He excels in a fast-paced spread offense.

In a scouting report prepared by 247Sports, Hawkins is praised for his "simple" and elegant throwing motion, his instinctual creativity in the pocket, and his all-around playmaking. He is viewed as a "potential game-breaker on Saturdays" who will "give defenses fits with the combination of his foot speed and willingness to challenge coverages vertically." His ability to throw accurate deep balls is displayed in his video highlight reel.

In two seasons under center, Hawkins threw for over 4,200 yards, completing 262 passes, with 54 touchdowns and only 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 24 touchdowns in his 33 career games. He led his team to a 10-2 record last season.

For his senior high school year, he is transferring to the renowned IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., where he will be exposed to top-level competition.

Ponies Rising

As SMU transitions into the Atlantic Coast Conference, Lashlee and his staff are assembling a formidable roster, with their 2025 recruiting class rising in the national rankings. Hawkins becomes the headliner in that class with talented co-stars, including fellow four-star standouts running back Daylon Singleton, EDGE Chinedu Onyeagoro, and linebacker Mark Iheanachor.

Hawkins has an NIL deal valued at $311,000.
