It was business as usual for the No. 10 Georgia Bulldogs (9-2, 6-2 Southeastern Conference) as they defeated the UMass Minutemen (2-9) 59-21 on Nov. 23 at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga. QB Carson Beck showed off his arm as he completed 20-of-31 passes for 297 yards and 4 touchdowns in the blowout victory.
Game Summary
The game started slow, with the score tied 7-7 going into the second quarter. RB CJ Hester scored the opening score for the Minutemen, which was reciprocated by a 17-yard touchdown reception by Georgia TE Oscar Delp.
The Bulldogs scored on their next three drives to take a 28-14 lead into the half. Their touchdowns came from RB Cash Jones, WR Dominic Lovett, and WR Arian Smith. The Bulldogs outscored the Minutemen 31-7 in the second half, and backup QB Gunner Stockton was able to see playing time in the rout.
Turning Point for Georgia
Georgia fans became anxious as UMass seemed to hang on to the Bulldogs early. However, the tide turned when the Minutemen fumbled the ball away inside their 30-yard line down 14-7. Georgia quickly converted the turnover into a Lovett touchdown, and the game became out of reach for UMass.
Looking Ahead
This was an expected win for Georgia, as a team as experienced and talented as the Bulldogs simply does not give up a home game to a struggling UMass squad. Firmly in the scope of the College Football Playoff, the Bulldogs will host the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (7-4, 5-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) on Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. EST on ABC. In addition, due to the chaos of the rest of the SEC this week, the Bulldogs have once again clinched a spot in the SEC Championship game on Dec. 7 for the opportunity to secure a first-round bye in the postseason.
