On Aug. 16, the SMU Mustangs named six team captains for the upcoming 2024 season. The captaincy positions were allocated based on votes cast by team members.
Mustangs QB1 Preston Stone
The first SMU team captain named is starting quarterback Preston Stone, who is entering his junior year as the signal caller for the Mustangs in their inaugural season in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Last season, as a redshirt sophomore, Stone started in 12 games for SMU, leading the team to the championship of the American Athletic Conference. Before suffering an injury in the final game of the regular season, he threw for 3.197 yards, which was fourth most in the AAC, threw 28 touchdowns which was third most in the conference and his passing efficiency of 161.1 was the best in the AAC.
Kevin Jennings
The second team captain who was named is backup QB Kevin Jennings. He is entering his sophomore season as Stone's understudy. Jennings appeared in eight games last season as a redshirt freshman. He started two of those eight games and threw for 618 yards and 5 touchdowns.
Justin Osborne
The third team captain is starting offensive lineman Justin Osborne, a graduate student who plays on the right side of the line. Osborne played in 12 games last season as a senior. He started 11 games at either right tackle and right guard. He was also named a team captain last season.
Jonathan McGill
The fourth team captain named by the Mustangs is starting safety Jonathan McGill, a graduate student who was also a team captain last season. He began his collegiate career at Stanford and then transferred to SMU. McGill played in all 14 games last season, starting in 12. He tallied 55 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and had 9 pass breakups. He was one of the leaders on a defense that finished No. 11 in the nation, allowing less than 18 points per game.
Kobe Wilson
The fifth team captain is starting linebacker Kobe Wilson, a senior from Snellville, Ga. Wilson appeared in all 14 of SMU's games last season, starting in 12. He recorded 80 total tackles, 3 tackles for loss, had 1 sack and secured 1 interception.
Elijah Roberts
The sixth and final team captain named by the Mustangs is standout defensive lineman Elijah Roberts, who
started in all 14 games last season. He made 37 tackles, including 10 sacks, which was second most in the AAC.
Roberts was recently named to the prestigious Bednarik Award Watch List. The Maxwell Football Club presents the Bednarik Award annually to the best defensive player of the year.
