Mid-Season Report of The UNC Tarheels

Writer: Mark FainMark Fain

Mack Brown has led the UNC Tarheels to a perfect 6-0 on the 2023 season so far. This is the first time since 1997 this has happened. Currently, the Tarheels are sitting in 2nd place in the ACC. The Tarheels are looking forward to keeping the momentum going.

So far, after 6 games you can see a big improvement on the offensive line. Randy Clements took over at the start of the 2023 season. He has spent the last couple of years at Baylor and North Texas. The improvement with that group has helped out QB Drake Maye this year, Even though Maye doesn't have the stats he did last year. Maye seems more comfortable and consistent this season.

So far Drake Maye has thrown for 1,902 yards and 12TD to 4 INTs. This is pretty solid and there are talks of being a 1st round draft pick in the NFL next spring. Another player that has stepped up their game for the Tarheels is Omarion Hampton. Omarion is a true sophomore this year and he has improved his yards per carry from 4.6 yards to 5.9 also had 112 carries for 658 yards and 8 touchdowns.

As you look at the schedule above, things are looking good for the Tarheels. The next 3 games shouldn't be an issue, but my concern is the last 3, Duke, Clemson, and NC State. Duke is UNC's major rival as they will play for the Victory Bell. Playing Clemson in Death Valley will be tough, finally, NC State has been a thorn in UNC's side for the last 3 years. However, I believe UNC will drop one of the last 3 games which one is the question? If I were a betting man I would say they will drop a game against Clemson in Death Valley. That would make UNC 11-1 on the regular season which would be incredible that you are looking at a ACC title game and possibly a shot to get in the college football playoffs.
