More and more eyes are on Mississippi State’s Will Rogers heading into the 2023 football season.
Just days after he was named to the 2023 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award Preseason Watch List, the Bulldog veteran was named to the 2023 Walter Camp Player of the Year Preseason Watch List on Friday.
The Walter Camp Award selects just 45 players for its watch list, and it is the nation's fourth-oldest individual college football accolade.
Rogers, a senior from Brandon, Miss., enters the 2023 football season with a significant spotlight on him. In his time wearing maroon and white, Rogers has rewritten the Mississippi State record book, owning 29 different program records.
Notably, Rogers has thrown for 10,689 career yards, the eighth-most in SEC history, and is just 2,478 yards shy of becoming the SEC's all-time leading passer. He is also the MSU record holder for the most 300-yard passing games (18) and 200-yard passing games (26). His 82 career touchdown passes rank eighth in SEC history.
In addition, Rogers has hit a unique milestone, being the only quarterback in SEC history with over 1,000 career completions. He is also on pace to become just the third SEC quarterback with 100 career touchdown passes.
This season, Rogers will play in a new offense led by first-year offensive coordinator Kevin Barbay, who comes to Mississippi State from the same role at Appalachian State. After spending his first three seasons in Mike Leach’s air raid, Bulldog fans are experiencing some skepticism heading into the season. But when he was asked about how different he expects the offense to be during SEC Media Days, Rogers is confident in what the new look offense will be able to do.
“Just a little more play action, more designed shots down the field. Coach Barbay did a really good job of scheming that up. It's something we're really looking forward to this year,” Rogers said.
Mississippi State will kick off the 2023 season at home on Saturday, September 2 against Southeastern Louisiana at 3 p.m. (CT).
