The Mizzou Tigers played against the Murray State Racers on Aug. 29 at Faurot Field and, as expected, secured a dominating victory. The Tigers prevailed 51-0.
The Mizzou Offense
The Tigers' offense performed exceptionally well, led by Brady Cook, who threw for 218 yards, including a touchdown pass. He displayed great composure and decision-making throughout the game, taking advantage of the opponent's weaknesses and controlling the game effectively.
Luther Burden III, a preseason All-Southeastern Conference Selection, showcased his versatility by contributing as a kick returner, flashing his talent in the running game and performing in his traditional capacity as a wide receiver. He recorded three receptions for 39 yards, including a touchdown, highlighting his importance to the Tigers' offense.
Running back Nate Noel, a transfer from Appalachian State, was the standout player of the day. He is tasked with providing balance to the team's offense and making up for the absence of RB Cody Schader's production from last season. Noel accumulated 48 yards on 11 carries and scored a touchdown. His ability to change pace and run with physicality will be vital in the tough SEC schedule ahead.
All in all, the Tigers' offense was impressive, indicating the team is moving in a positive direction.
The Tigers' Defense
To pitch a shutout, the defense must exert tremendous effort and passion. The cornerbacks must cover well and make tackles in space, the linebackers must communicate and fill gaps in the run game and the defensive line must control the line of scrimmage on every play. That's exactly what the Tigers did in this game.
Toriano Pride Jr., the transfer from Clemson, showed his instincts with an interception and stingy coverage throughout the game, limiting the Racers' passing offense. Senior LB Triston Newson led all tacklers with 5, including a tackle for loss. He was all over the place, which is a great sign for the Tigers, as they will need this level of production from him week in and week out. The defense was outstanding with contributions from all players.
Final Tigers' Game Thoughts
Special teams play was a concern heading into this season with kicker Harrison Mevis leaving for the NFL. However, the Tigers seem to have found a great replacement in Blake Craig. He was 3 for 3 on field goal attempts, and punter Luke also had a great day, flipping the field with 2 punts totaling 97 yards, including one that pinned the Racers inside the 20. Even though it's only Week 1, the Tigers looked complete and dangerous. They did not play down to the competition, which is all that can be asked for in Week 1 of the college football season.
