The Old Line State outduels the Palmetto State!
One of the nation's top interior offensive linemen was thought to be headed to South Carolina to play with the Gamecocks and head coach Shane Beamer. However, on Aug. 3., IOL Jaylen Gilchrist committed to play for head coach Mike Locksley and his Maryland Terrapins.
The Terps are rising and shining.
Terps assistant coach Latrell Scott was primarily responsible for securing Gilchrist's commitment.
Force of Nature
Gilchrist is 6-foot-5 and weighs 295 pounds. He is from Virginia Beach, Va. He is described by 247Sports as a "[l]ong-armed and heavy-handed" lineman who flashes "punch power in the run game." Scouts remark that he overwhelms opponents at the prep level.
He is a "[s]trong point-of-attack player who can recover from an initial knock-back with sudden power and conviction." He has demonstrated the versatility to play at various positions along the offensive line, but projects as an interior line player at the collegiate level. In light of his physique and athleticism, he also projects as an eventual NFL player.
He missed some time in his junior year with a collarbone injury but is on the mend. A four-year varsity player, he played snaps on both sides of the ball as a freshman and sophomore.
Terrapin Station
Gilchrist's commitment is a major plus for Maryland. He is the top-rated recruit in their 2025 class and the seventh four-star recruit to join the class. With his commitment, the Terrapins now have the No. 33 class in the 2025 cycle according to On3, vaulting up from the No. 44 spot they occupied prior to his commitment.
Gilchrist joins the following Maryland four-star pledges:
Malik Washington, quarterback
Zymear Smith, athlete
Bryce Jenkins, defensive lineman
Iverson Howard, running back
CJ Smith, linebacker
Jett White, cornerback
Gilchrist is an elite offensive lineman, and the Terrapins look forward to him stepping in right away to assist in their running attack and pass protection schemes.

Inspiration, move me brightly
Light the song with sense and color
Hold away despair
More than this I will not ask
Faced with mysteries dark and vast
Statements just seem vain at last
Some rise
Some fall
Some climb
To get to terrapin
Counting stars by candlelight
All are dim but one is bright
The spiral light of Venus
Rising first and shining best
On, from the northwest corner
Of a brand new crescent moon
While crickets and cicadas sing
A rare and different tune
