Two historic college football franchises, the No. 6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (8-1 overall) and the No. 3 Texas Longhorns (9-1, 5-1 Southeastern Conference), will visit each other's home stadiums in the near future. Notre Dame announced on Nov. 19 that a home-and-home series between the schools will take place in 2028 and 2029.
Texas fans can start planning to visit Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Ind., on Sept. 9, 2028. Then, on Sept. 22, 2029, Notre Dame fans will travel en masse to Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas. Don't be surprised if Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman and Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian are still with their respective schools when the games are played.
Announcing this home-and-home series at this time gives the Texas and Notre Dame fan bases something to plan for in the future. Furthermore, Freeman and Sarkisian also can use the prestigious series when recruiting players in upcoming seasons.
Notre Dame Leads Series
Notre Dame and Texas have played each other 12 times overall with the Fighting Irish holding a 9-3 record. In their last meeting on Sept. 4, 2016, in Austin, backup quarterback Tyrone Swoopes dove into the end zone from 6 yards out for a 50-47 double-overtime win. Notre Dame was ranked No. 10 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll going into that Saturday night showdown.
Charlie Strong was in his third season as the Longhorns' head coach and he leaned into then-freshman quarterback Steve Buechele to lead his offense. In front of 102,315 fans at home, Buechele happened to be the first freshman QB to start a season opener for Texas since Bobby Layne in 1944.
When reviewing how the overall series has panned out, there's no doubt that Notre Dame has been the dominant team. The Fighting Irish are 3-1 at home against the Longhorns, 4-1 on the road and 2-1 when playing at neutral sites. Notre Dame and Texas first played one another in 1913, a 30-7 victory for the Fighting Irish.
Also, these schools have found themselves among nationally-ranked teams frequently when facing one another. Notre Dame and Texas have both been ranked in seven of their games, and the Fighting Irish have been ranked nine times when playing the Longhorns.
Texas Fourth in All-Time Wins
No matter what records these schools put together between now and 2028, this nonconference clash pits two of the winningest programs against one another. Texas sits fourth on the NCAA all-time victory list with 957 wins, Inside Texas reports. Notre Dame is a close fifth with 956 wins.
Notre Dame has a historic stranglehold on teams from the SEC, with a 49-26 overall mark. The last time the Fighting Irish played an SEC team was earlier this season, beating current No. 15 Texas A&M 23-13 at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas.
No information on the starting times or TV networks has been released at this time. As the game dates get closer, all of that will be settled.
