Ohio State quarterback Devin Brown announced his decision to enter the Transfer Portal via his Instagram profile on Dec. 8. Brown stated that he will be leaving the program after three years with the No. 6 Buckeyes (10-2, 7-2 Big Ten Conference), but not before finishing out this postseason with the team.

The former four-star QB was 247Sports' No. 5-ranked QB in the 2022 class. 247Sports now has him rated as a three-star prospect as he enters the Transfer Portal with two years of eligibility remaining.

Devin Brown and His Time at Ohio State

Brown came in to Ohio State expecting to someday take the starting job. He competed enough to always be in the conversation. But he was beaten out for the job in the last two years by Kyle McCord and Will Howard. Brown made a point about his desire to do all he could to compete for the highly-coveted job of the Buckeyes' starting QB each year as opposed to leaving Ohio State.

Despite losing the battle twice, Brown saw the field in blowouts and a few times due to injury. After McCord's transfer last December, he got an opportunity to start in the Cotton Bowl against Missouri. But he got injured just a few snaps into the game.

This year, Brown was regularly the second QB entering games in blowouts. He had a big moment against Michigan State (5-7, 3-6 B1G). Howard got temporarily knocked and Brown was forced into action. On a third-and-10 inside the red zone, Brown made a perfect throw to wide receiver Jeremiah Smith for a touchdown that gave the Buckeyes a three-score lead going into halftime.

Brown finished the 2024 regular season going 10-of-19 passing for 108 yards and 1 TD. In his collegiate career, he is currently 26-of-47 for 325 yards and 3 TDs. He has only thrown one career interception while adding 37 rushing yards and a TD on the ground.

Where Could Brown Land?

There is no way to accurately predict where transfer QBs will land in college football's current landscape. Many other players will enter the Transfer Portal soon. Temas need to evaluate their options once they learn who is returning along with players that will be available. Brown took an official visit to Ole Miss during his recruitment. The No. 14 Rebels (9-3, 5-3 Southeastern Conference) will lose starting QB Jaxson Dart to the NFL after this season. They have some younger players at the position of the roster, including former four-star prospect Walker Howard. On paper with their current players, the Rebels could be one team to look out for in the Brown sweepstakes.

Brown got some attention from Big Ten schools such as Wisconsin (5-7, 3-6 B1G) during his recruitment in high school. The Badgers might look to add a new QB after the somewhat inconsistent play of current starter Braedyn Locke. Transfer Portal QB Tyler Van Dyke showed some promise before getting injured in the season's third game. Van Dyke might return with a medical redshirt. Regardless, Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell might look to Ohio State, his alma mater and former place of employment, for a new field general in Brown.

There may not be any answers around Brown's decision anytime soon as he finishes out the postseason with Ohio State. Many dominoes may fall before he makes a call on where he will spend the remainder of his collegiate career.
