Penn State will face FIU for just the second time in either school's history as the two sides last met in 2007 at Beaver Stadium. In that game, the Nittany Lions won 59-0 and were sparked by 295 passing yards and 3 touchdowns from quarterback Anthony Morelli.

The Golden Panthers finished the 2023 season 4-8 overall and 1-7 in Conference USA play and will play a Big Ten Conference team for the first time since 2018.

FIU has played against members of the Big Ten six previous times, with contests against Iowa (2008), Indiana (2015, 2016, 2018), Maryland (2016) and Penn State (2007). The Panthers will kickoff the 2024 season against Indiana in Bloomington.

For the Nittany Lions, the announcement of the FIU matchup all but finalizes their 2025 schedule which also features non-conference games against Nevada and Villanova.
