The Texas A&M Aggies football program is taking off with a full reset at head coach, bringing in Mike Elko to change things up after Jimbo Fisher was relieved of his duties. Aggie fans are hopeful Elko can change up what’s been going on in wins and losses.
Under Fisher, Texas A&M finished 7-6 last season and the Aggies were 4-4 in Southeastern Conference play and went winless in four games on the road. Kyle Field provided a home-field advantage, going 6-1 but Fisher was not able to score big-time top 25 victories last season. Texas A&M went 0-5 in those contests, which didn’t sit well with the Aggie faithful.
Fisher made headlines with a massive contract with the Aggies, but he couldn’t push Texas A&M to a higher level of success. Elko is in his third year as a head coach, putting together a 16-9 overall record in his previous stint with the Duke Blue Devils.
In looking at Texas A&M’s returning starters, the Aggies have something to work with on offense and defense. Connor Weigman gets the starting nod at quarterback. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound sophomore was 82-of-119 passing for 979 yards, 8 touchdowns and had 2 interceptions. Weigman will look to hook up with wide receiver Noah Thomas and running back Amari Daniels is going to make his mark in the backfield. He had 105 carries for 532 yards and 6 touchdowns last season. Le'Veon Moss, who had 96 carries for 484 yards and 5 touchdowns in 2023, will be looked upon to have an even better season.
On the offensive line, left tackle Trey Zuhn Jr., left guard Mark Nabou and right tackle Chase Bisontis are going to work hard at protecting Weigman in the pocket.
On defense, senior defensive lineman Shemar Turner looks to anchor the Aggies while linebacker Taurean York, and cornerbacks Tyreek Chappell and Nic-Bryce Anderson are going to hopefully be “ball hawks” and keep opponents’ passing games in check.
With those returners and some help in the Transfer Portal, Texas A&M has its work cut out this season. And the Aggies don’t start the 2024 college football season with a pushover, either.
Week 1: Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Keep your eyes on the battle in the trenches between Notre Dame and A&M. Notre Dame lost some power on its offensive line, which could mean Texas A&M’s defensive line might have a field day. Duke transfer quarterback Riley Leonard will run the Fighting Irish’s offense. Notre Dame holds a 3-2 series lead overall, but the Aggies won 24-3 in their last meeting in 2001. This game is at Kyle Field and will be nuts. But Notre Dame will find a way to spoil Elko’s debut on the Aggies’ sidelines.
Record: 0-1
Week 2: McNeese State Cowboys
Texas A&M will be fighting mad after its opening loss. Thankfully, McNeese State makes a visit to College Station, Texas. These teams have only met once, a 38-24 win in 2001 for Texas A&M. McNeese State finished 1-10 overall last season and 1-6 in Southland Conference play. The Aggies’ depth will simply be too much for the Cowboys to handle. Give Elko his first victory in Aggieland.
Record: 1-1
Week 3: at Florida Gators
Florida has stellar quarterback Graham Mertz and running back Montrell Johnson Jr. in the backfield on offense. They better play great because Florida head coach Billy Napier is on the hot seat. This has to be a winning season for the Gators’ boss—or else. The last time these teams met was in 2022 with Florida coming out on top, 41-24. Florida and Texas A&M are tied 3-3 in their overall series. Florida’s experience will be just enough to beat the Aggies.
Record: 1-2 (0-1 SEC)
Week 4: Bowling Green Falcons
This will be a first-time matchup with Bowling Green. The Falcons are coming off a 7-6 season, their first one since 2015. Scot Loeffler enters his sixth season as the Falcons’ leader. Bowling Green will have options at quarterback from Connor Bazelak, Camden Orth and Lucian Anderson III, but it will not matter. Give the Aggies a win here.
Record: 2-2 (0-1 SEC)
Week 5: Arkansas Razorbacks
Arkansas and Texas A&M have a long history of facing one another on the football field. The Razorbacks are up 42-34-3 overall, but the Aggies have won 10 out of the last 11 games. Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman will certainly have his team ready to play in Arlington, Texas, but the Aggies will keep up their winning ways in this series.
Record: 3-2 (1-1 SEC)
Week 6: Missouri Tigers
The last time these two teams met was in 2021 when the Aggies won 35-14. Texas A&M holds a 9-7 series lead. Eli Drinkwitz enters his fifth season as Missouri head coach.
The Tigers went 11-2 and finished it up with a 14-3 Cotton Bowl victory against Ohio State in 2023. Missouri will inch closer to the all-time series lead with a win in College Station.
Record: 3-3 (1-2 SEC)
Week 7: at Mississippi State Bulldogs
Jeff Lebby comes in for this first season as Mississippi State’s head coach and he will have former Baylor quarterback Blake Shapen leading the offense. Lebby has a solid track record in molding quarterbacks into successful players. In this battle of first-year head coaches, give Texas A&M gets the edge.
Record: 4-3 (2-2 SEC)
Week 8: LSU Tigers
LSU holds a 32-23-3 overall record against Texas A&M. These teams last met in 2023 when LSU scored a 42-30 victory. Losing Heisman Trophy-winner Jayden Daniels to the NFL may set back the offense for the Tigers but Garrett Nussmaier takes over as the starting quarterback. This LSU team, under head coach Brian Kelly, will be an SEC powerhouse in 2024 and the Tigers will win this one.
Record: 4-4 (2-3 SEC)
Week 9: at South Carolina Gamecocks
The Aggies are all over this overall series record, holding a 9-1 record. The two teams last met in 2023, with Texas A&M winning 30-17. Shane Beamer looks to bring the Gamecocks back their winning ways after finishing 5-7 last season, which was a drop from 2022’s 8-5 mark. The Gamecocks have seven returners on defense, including big-time linebacker Debo Williams. But look for Texas A&M to win in Columbia, S.C.
Record: 5-4 (3-3 SEC)
Week 10: New Mexico State Aggies
Tony Sanchez takes over as the New Mexico State head coach in 2024. He’s going to be working hard at keeping his Aggies on track. They had a great season in 2023, finishing 10-3 and made an appearance in the Conference USA championship game. Going up against Texas A&M will be a challenge for the Aggies from New Mexico and will be a home win at Kyle Field.
Record: 6-4 (3-3 SEC)
Week 11: at Auburn Tigers
Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze is looking put quarterback Payton Thorne on the track to success. The Tigers boast a receiving corps of Cam Coleman, Robert Lewis and Ke’Andre Lambert-Smith. Look for tight end Rivaldo Fairweather to make an impact, too. Thorne and the Tigers will be too much for Texas A&M to handle on the road.
Record: 6-5 (3-4 SEC)
Week 12: Texas Longhorns
Here we go, Texas A&M fans. The Aggies get to welcome Texas to Kyle Field for the first time since 2011. The Longhorns will have star quarterback Quinn Ewers and a stacked backfield along with Steve Sarkisian's coaching talents to College Station. Do the Aggies have a chance here? It will be a dogfight for sure. But the visitors from Austin are going to take this one.
Record: 6-6 (3-5 SEC)
Texas A&M Overview
Elko and the Aggies will be putting together a great first season together, but it’s going to be challenging for them to do so. Will Texas A&M improve from last season? On the field, you better believe it. Watch, though, how Elko helps the team turn around its play on offense and defense. Still, a 6-6 record should be a solid lock for the Aggies.
