With Week 2 of the college football season ending, many individual players have given fans outstanding performances. No matter how early it is in the season, it is hard not to be ecstatic over these players and what they bring to the table. At College Football Dawgs, we love to honor standout players, highlighting those who go the extra mile and celebrating the players that are downright dawgs.
One of these players will win the Dawg of the Year award at the end of the season, given to the best player in college football from the entire staff here at College Football Dawgs. After vigorous debate and voting, the current rankings for the candidates have been set with the conclusion of Week 2. Here are the current favorites for the DOTY award.
Scoring Format
Each member of College Football Dawgs was asked to fill out a ballot with their top 3 candidates for Dawg of the Year. Every first-place vote is worth three points, a second-place vote is worth two points and a third-place vote is worth a single point. After the votes are tallied for each ballot, the candidates are ranked by point total.
DOTY Results Nos. 1-5
QB Quinn Ewers, Texas (39 Points)
Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers was a force in Week 2, as the No. 2 Longhorns (2-0) marched into Ann Arbor, Mich., and dismantled the No. 17 Michigan Wolverines (1-1). Ewers threw for 246 yards and 3 touchdowns on Sept. 7, as the Longhorns beat the Wolverines by a score of 31-12. Ranked as one of the best QB prospects in the country, Ewers comes in at No. 1 for the Week 2 Dawg of the Year rankings. Ewers and Texas will try to dominate UTSA (1-1) in Week 3.
RB Ashton Jeanty, Boise State (29 Points)
Jeanty has lit the college football world on fire in the first two weeks. The talented Boise State running back can do it all, as he already has 9 touchdowns and 459 yards rushing. The Broncos (1-1) faced a tall task in Week 2, playing the No. 9 Oregon Ducks (2-0) in Eugene, Ore. Jeanty gave the Ducks another scare, blasting off for 3 touchdowns and 192 rushing yards. It took a game-winning field goal for the Ducks to overcome Jeanty's attack. Looking toward Week 3, Jeanty is primed to run all over Portland State (0-2)
QB Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss (19 Points)
Jaxson Dart and the No. 5 Ole Miss Rebels (2-0) are on a roll. The Rebels offense has turned heads throughout the first two weeks, and Dart is a major reason why. Ole Miss outscored their opponents in the first two weeks by a margin of 128-3. While it is still early and the competition is not yet heightened, Dart has shown no signs of slowing down. In Week 2, Dart went for 377 yards passing, a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown. Through two weeks of play, Dart already has 8 total touchdowns and 795 yards passing. In Week 3, Dart hopes to continue to shine against Wake Forest (1-1).
QB Carson Beck, Georgia (15 Points)
Carson Beck continues to play at a high level as the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs (2-0) are ranked as the best team in the country. In Week 2, Beck and the Bulldogs dominated Tennessee Tech (0-2), as Beck threw for 5 touchdowns and 242 yards. In Week 1, Georgia was tested early while playing No. 22 Clemson (1-1), but Beck rose to the occasion as the Bulldogs dominated the Tigers 34-3. The Bulldogs are a scary sight for any opposition, and Beck keeps them rolling. Beck has a chance to surge into the top 3 against the Kentucky Wildcats (1-1) in Week 3.
QB Cameron Ward, Miami (14 Points)
Just behind Beck comes the electric QB Cameron Ward. Ward has made himself right at home with the No. 10 Miami Hurricanes (2-0) while showing why he is one of the best QBs in the country. In Week 2 against Florida A&M (2-1), Ward exploded for 3 touchdowns and 304 yards. His impressive game pushed his season total to 6 touchdowns and 689 yards. If Ward and Miami continue to roll into Atlantic Coast Conference play, he may find himself climbing up our rankings. Ward's next task is to keep the fire roaring against Ball State (1-0) in Week 3.
