The year 2023 was a record one for South Florida quarterback Byrum Brown. Brown, a true dual-threat quarterback for the Bulls, led USF to a 7-6 record and a 45-0 beatdown of Syracuse in the Boca Raton Bowl. He now finds himself among the names on the Walter Camp Award Watch List, which was released on Monday.

The numbers that Brown put up last season were stellar and record-setting despite the fact that he did not earn all-American Athletic Conference honors. Among his numbers from last season include:

  • First 3,000-yard passer in school history

  • 3,3292 yards passing, single-season school record

  • 26 passing touchdowns, single-season school record

  • 64.6 percent completion percentage, a single-season school record

Brown has been named to the 2024 Walter Camp Award watch list for his efforts.

Byrum Brown and His Play

What can Brown do for the Bulls? Everything. Brown gained 4,101 total yards, good enough for No. 5 in the Football Bowl Subdivision, and scored 37 total touchdowns. Against Florida A&M, Brown posted 5 total touchdowns in a 38-24 win over the Rattlers.

He posted four games of over 300 yards passing, including 435 yards and 2 TDs in a win over Rice. In addition, Brown added 82 yards on the ground and a touchdown. That increased his total yardage in that game to 517 along with 3 total touchdowns.

Brown was involved in an offensive shootout with Memphis quarterback Seth Henigan last season. Henigan scored 5 total touchdowns. Brown, though, completed 80 percent of his passes, gained 457 total yards and also scored 5 total touchdowns in a 59-50 loss to the Tigers.

Against Charlotte, Brown again posted 5 total touchdowns in a win over the 49ers.

Brown was No. 2 in the AAC in total offense and averaged 315 yards per game. He was 1 of 2 players to pass for at least 3,000 yards and rush for at least 800 yards last season. The other player? That happened to be Heisman Trophy winner and LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Brown Entering 2024 Season

Brown leads a Bulls offense that returns 10 starters in Year 2 under head coach Alex Golesh. He will operate behind an offensive line with 4 returning starters. In addition, Brown will have 3 of his top receivers back, including Sean Atkins (92 catches, 1,054 yards, 7 TDs).

Brown is one of the most productive quarterbacks on the 2024 Walter Camp Award Watch List and this season looks promising for USF.

Brown and the Bulls must travel to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama, but they do get the Miami Hurricanes and Memphis at home. Based on their schedule, the Bulls might gain a couple of victories in the win column and finish the season 9-3.
