The UTSA Roadrunners have announced a game against the University of Incarnate Word to be played next year. The game will be held on Sept. 13, 2025, at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
This marks the second matchup between the teams. UTSA defeated UIW 35-7 at the Alamodome in 2019. With the addition of this game, the Roadrunners have finalized their nonconference schedule for next year, which includes trips to Texas A&M and Colorado State, and a home game against Texas State.
UIW History
The university, founded in 1881, is the largest Catholic university in the state of Texas and is located in San Antonio. The Cardinals football program was created in 2009 and initially competed as an NCAA Division II team in the Lone Star Conference. In 2013, the team competed as an FCS independent school before officially joining the Southland Conference in 2014.
The Cardinals have been very successful in the last three seasons, posting a 30-7 record. UIW has finished first or second in the Southland each of the last three years and made two appearances in the FCS playoffs. Former Washington State and current Miami Hurricane quarterback Cam Ward led the team in 2020 and 2021. In 2021, Ward put up video game-like stats, throwing for 4,648 yards and 47 touchdowns.
The Cardinals made the playoff semifinals in 2022 under coach GJ Kinne, now the coach of the nearby Texas State Bobcats. Kinne, considered one of the game's top up-and-coming coaches, led the Bobcats to an 8-5 record and their first-ever bowl appearance and victory in his first season.
