The West Virginia Mountaineers are continuing their recruiting hot streak with the addition of 2025 four-star defensive lineman Amir Leonard-Jean Charles. Charles announced his commitment to coach Neal Brown’s program via Twitter on June 19.
The Nashville Lipscomb Academy standout chose the Mountaineers over Syracuse and Tennessee. He also held offers from Texas, Georgia and Michigan. Charles is rated as a four-star recruit by Rivals.com and holds an 86.39 player rating according to On3.com.
Charles’ Bio, Stats
Charles is a 6-foot-4 and 305-pound defensive lineman who hails from Mount Juliet, Tenn. Last season at Lipscomb Academy, he recorded 23 tackles, 3 tackles for loss and a sack for the Mustangs. It may be a shock that Brown was able to steal Charles away from Tennessee, however, Charles has had ties to the mountain state for quite some time now. His mother, Antoinette, is a WVU Swimming alum and the four-star has a great relationship with defensive line coach Andrew Jackson.
“Me and coach Jackson would talk a lot and he would come down to Tennessee, to see the family and really hang out with us,” Charles told Rivals.com. “In that time, we really made a connection.”
The coaching staff at WVU has long been impressed with Charles since they extended a scholarship offer to him in August 2023. They particularly like his size and the leverage he plays with on the defensive line. Charles should be an instant contributor when the Mountaineers open the 2025 season against Robert Morris.
West Virginia Hot Streak
Coach Neal Brown has rewarded the Mountaineer faithful for their patience with him with the 2025 recruiting class. The 2025 recruiting class is setting up to be his best at WVU. The Mountaineers currently hold the 23rd overall composite rank in the 2025 class, according to 247Sports.com. With the addition of Charles, more players will be looking to join him in Morgantown. Charles accompanies fellow four-star standout running back Deandre Desinor in committing to the Mountaineers. They will be joined by corner backs Terrance Edwards and Serious Stinyard, quarterback Scotty Fox and safety Sammy Etienne.
