- The Next Great Buckeyes from the State of Texas
Credit: Stephen Leonard Buckeye Backers The cliche is that everything is bigger in Texas, and that bodes true when it comes to Ohio State footballers from the Lone Star State . The list of greats is the size of the state of Texas itself. Former RB JK Dobbins is second overall in career rushing yards and the only Ohio State running back to rush for 2,000 yards in a season. Former CB Jeff Okudah was a consensus All-American. Former QB J.T. Barrett is first overall in career passing yards and passing touchdowns. Former WR Jackson Smith-Njigba holds the record for most receiving yards in a single game and single season. Former players WR Garrett Wilson, EDGE Baron Browning, and the man who held together the National Championship run on the offensive line, Donovan Jackson, all hail from the Lone Star State. Some would argue that even former Longhorn QB Quinn Ewers, who started his collegiate career at Ohio State, is worth mentioning. This is an impressive list of Buckeye greats. While speaking with the media today, Texas-born RB James Peoples told Buckeye Backers why Texas boys flourish at Ohio State. “I think Texas has some of the best ball, the best athletes out there,” he said. “There are great players all around but I guess it’s a trend”. A trend, indeed. Peoples signed with the Buckeyes as part of the 2024 recruiting class as a highly ranked 4-star out of San Antonio Veterans Memorial High School. Despite offers from Texas, TCU, Baylor, Alabama, Oklahoma, and others, Peoples sided with the trend and culture in Columbus. Primed to be the leader in the RB room after learning from TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Junkins as a freshman, Peoples describes his game as a "one-cut slasher." He went on to agree with Henderson's comparison (from the NFL combine) of Peoples' game to that of former Buckeye RB JK Dobbins. Buckeye Nation is looking for this trend of greatness to continue with the next group of incoming Texans. True freshmen like CB Devin Sanchez, who already looks NFL-ready, and linebacker Riley Pettijohn, who has already made a presence in the Michey Marotti strength program. Another Texan on the Buckeyes roster, LB Payton Pierce returns from last year’s title team and is a favorite of LB Coach James Laurinaitis. Last, but not least, is Rice transfer Ethan "Big E" Onianwa. The Katy, Texas native weighs in at 357 pounds and will likely cover the blindside at left tackle for the Buckeyes. Credit: Stephen Leonard Buckeye Backers Can the current Lone Star State Buckeyes flourish like the aforementioned Buckeyes? History says yes. Ohio State opens the upcoming season with the Texas Longhorns coming to Columbus August 30, 2025. A great test for these profound Texans in the Buckeye State.
- Bech Scores Late TD as American Team Wins Senior Bowl
©️Dominic Ambrose-College Football Dawgs MOBILE, Ala — Overcoming a slow start and an 11-point deficit, the American team won the 76th edition of the Senior Bowl dramatically 22-19 on Saturday, Feb. 1. After cutting the National team's lead to three points, the American team got possession back with 2:32 left in the fourth quarter. Twelve plays later, quarterback Seth Henigan connected with receiver Jack Bech on a game-winning, 2-yard touchdown pass to earn the victory. Game Summary The National team opened the scoring with a 10-play, 77-yard drive after receiving the opening kickoff. The drive was highlighted by running back Ollie Gordon II connecting with receiver Jayden Higgins on a 32-yard touchdown play. A 2-point conversion helped put the National team up 8-0. Following a series of punts by both teams, the National team turned the ball over on downs. The American team capitalized on a short field, driving 46 yards in three plays to tie the score at 8-8 in the second quarter. The drive was highlighted by quarterback Jaxson Dart 's 7-yard TD run. The third quarter saw only a single scoring drive when the National team added a 39-yard field goal by Ryan Fitzgerald to make the score 11-8. The fourth quarter began with the National team's Junior Tafuna recovering a fumble on the American's 24-yard line. Five plays later, quarterback Tyler Shough found receiver Da'Quan Felton on a 1-yard TD pass and a 2-point conversion put the National team up 19-8. But the American team answered. Running back RJ Harvey hit receiver Tai Felton on a 25-yard TD pass. The 2-point conversion made it 19-16. After a punt and two drives ending with turnovers on downs, the American team had a chance with 2:32 left in the fourth quarter. Henigan drove the American's offense 85 yards downfield until he connected with Bech for the game-winning TD as time expired. Senior Bowl Highlight of the Game Bech scored the game-winning TD while wearing his brother's jersey number. After losing his brother Tiger a month prior in the car attack in New Orleans, Jack honored his brother by wearing his No. 7. By scoring the winning TD to highlight his game-best 6-reception, 68-yard performance, Bech's play earned him the game's MVP award.
- The 2025 Senior Bowl All-Star Team: Top Performers Revealed
© Vasha Hunt-Imagn Images MOBILE, Ala . — All good things must come to an end, and in the blink of an eye, Senior Bowl practices wrapped up, with game day marking the final chapter at Hancock Whitney Stadium. The American Team emerged victorious with a 22-19 win over the National Team. Several standout players made big moves in their draft stock this week. It's clear that many NFL teams will be leaving here with smiles after seeing these prospects firsthand. Before the game kicks off, let's take a closer look at the players who earned "Senior Bowl All-Star" honors through impressive performances during practice. Senior Bowl All-Star Selections QB Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss This year’s quarterback draft class isn’t as deep as the 2024 group, but Jaxson Dart is an intriguing prospect. Dart stood out with his quick decision-making, impressive off-platform throws, and the ability to step up when the pocket collapsed. He could see his stock rise as scouts take notice of his potential. RB Trevor Etienne, Georgia After battling injuries this past season, Etienne looked fully healthy here. He impressed in the running back-versus-linebacker drills, showing off sharp route-running and fluid movement as a pass-catcher. After a strong week, Etienne was named by his peers as a top running back in practice. RB Brashard Smith, SMU Smith excels at creating explosive runs, especially when defenses fail to fill gaps properly. In a deep running back class, Smith’s playmaking ability should make him an intriguing pick in the mid-rounds of the draft. WR Tez Johnson, Oregon Despite concerns about his size (156 pounds), Johnson impressed with his sharp route-running and high football IQ, excelling as a dynamic slot receiver. His stellar week here erased many doubts about his ability to transition to the NFL. WR Jack Bech, TCU A game-winning touchdown catch by Bech in the final play of regulation helped seal the American Team’s victory. Throughout the week, Bech was a consistent performer, showing his toughness and high motor. He’s the type of gritty player who could stick in the NFL for years to come. TE Elijah Arroyo, Miami Arroyo was one of the most physically imposing players in Mobile, dominating pass catchers with his 6-foot-4, 250-pound frame. He showed soft hands and impressive blocking skills, and his red-zone potential is through the roof after a seven-touchdown 2024 season. OL Grey Zabel, North Dakota State Zabel’s performance at the Senior Bowl made it hard to imagine him slipping out of the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Going up against top-tier defensive linemen, Zabel impressed scouts with his versatility, shifting to center after five years at tackle. His ability to hold his own in Mobile proved he’s ready for the next level. OL Jonah Savaiinaea, Arizona Savaiinaea displayed elite run-blocking skills with his wide frame, solid footwork and awareness in the trenches. His ability to play both guard and tackle, coupled with a penalty-free 2024 season, makes him a solid bet to be a long-term NFL starter. DL Darius Alexander, Toledo Alexander is a disruptive defensive lineman with a blend of size, power and athleticism. Standing at 6-foot-3 and 280 pounds, he possesses a powerful frame that allows him to hold the point of attack and shed blockers with ease in multiple defensive schemes. Alexander's explosiveness off the line, coupled with his quick first step, makes him a dangerous pass rusher from both the interior and edge positions. DL Walter Nolen, Ole Miss Nolen, who has drawn comparisons to Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver, has elite physical tools. He’s still figuring out how to put it all together, but his talent and potential make him a top-32 prospect in the 2025 draft class. LB Jack Kiser, Notre Dame Kiser was a standout during practices, earning the title of top linebacker on the American Team. His instinctive play, coupled with multiple interceptions, showed his ability to be a difference-maker in coverage and against the run. His maturity could make him an immediate impact player in the NFL. LB Jeffrey Bassa, Oregon Bassa’s background as a defensive back helped him shine as a linebacker with excellent coverage skills. His solid frame and physicality also make him a strong run defender. Bassa proved throughout the week that he has the versatility to make an impact at the next level. DB Azareye'h Thomas, Florida State With exceptional fluidity, length and physicality, Thomas is set to be one of the top cornerbacks selected in April's draft. His size and press coverage ability make him a strong fit at the professional level as Thomas served as the Seminoles' primary boundary corner this past season.
