  • Arkansas Set to Face UAB in 'Get Right' Game for the Hogs

Arkansas (1-1) will look to bounce back from a disappointing road loss by playing the UAB Blazers (1-1) in the Razorbacks' home opener at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium at 4:15 p.m. EST on Sept. 14. The Razorbacks were dealt a heartbreaking 39-31 loss to No. 13 Oklahoma State last Saturday. With the pain of that loss still prevalent, the Sept. 14 contest will be a crucial one. With the gauntlet of Southeastern Conference play awaiting Arkansas on the other side of the Blazers, procuring a victory is of the utmost importance. What's at Stake? Arkansas is looking to get back on the left side of the win column after a disappointing loss in Stillwater, Okla. The first game in front of the home crowd is always special, especially for a team that should be improved over their 2023 counterpart. The Blazers, meanwhile, are also looking to bounce back from a loss, though no part of the 32-6 thumping against Louisiana Monroe was heartbreaking or close. UAB is a heavy underdog this weekend and it'll take a miracle for head coach Trent Dilfer 's squad to pull off the upset. Key Players: Arkansas There may not be a bigger 180 in college football this year than Arkansas' offense. A year after the Razorbacks struggled mightily to score points or move the ball, offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino has the offense firing on all cylinders. Quarterback Taylen Green and running back Ja'Quinden Jackson are major components of that offense. While Arkansas lost in Stillwater, 648 yards of offense is a pretty solid total that both players contributed heavily to for the Razorbacks. Arkansas' secondary also shined against Oklahoma State, particularly defensive backs Hudson Clark and Jaheim Singletary. If Arkansas' defense—especially those two players—are on it early, then it could be a long day for the Blazers' offense. Key Players: UAB Quarterback Jacob Zeno is the undisputed leader of this Blazers squad. His performance could determine if UAB has a chance to win entering the fourth quarter. In UAB's season-opening victory over Alcorn State, Zeno threw for 215 yards and 2 touchdowns. In UAB's 32-6 loss to Louisiana Monroe, those numbers dipped to 167 yards and zero scores, respectively. Safety Sirad Bryant leads UAB in tackles through two weeks. He—along with the rest of UAB's defense—will have to match Arkansas' physicality in order to stay in the game. If UAB's defense does its job, then the Blazers could turn this into a game late. Broadcast Information Date: Sept. 14 Time: 4:15 p.m. EST Where: Donald W. • Michigan Set to Defend 'The Big House' Against Fresno State

Head coach Sherrone Moore and the Michigan Wolverines will kick off their 2024 season under the lights at home against the Fresno State Bulldogs on Aug. 31. After going 4-0 as interim head coach during Jim Harbaugh’s suspension, Moore will look to build on his 2023 momentum in his first season as head coach. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. EST on NBC and Peacock. Key Players: Michigan Wolverines Between heavy turnover and new offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell, the Wolverines' offense is going to look quite different. After losing several key pieces on offense, a Donovan Edwards-led run game will be key to their success. An inexperienced receiving corps put together a combined 438 yards on 40 receptions for 3 touchdowns in 2023. No starting quarterback has been named yet. Whoever it is will look to dynamic tight end Colston Loveland in the passing game. The Wolverines boast a lot of star power on the defensive side. That's due to arguably the best defensive tackle duo in the FBS, Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant. This group is primed to succeed in the trenches. They are monsters in the tackles-for-loss (TFL) area. Graham and Grant combined for 12.5 TFL last fall. Michigan fills out the box with Josaiah Stewart, Derrick Moore, Jaishawn Barham and Ernest Hausmann. Defensive backs Will Johnson and Makari Paige are there, too. Michigan will rely on their defense to control the game. Key Players: Fresno State Bulldogs While losing their elite coach, Jeff Telford, the returning roster is fantastic. There's a lot of dependence on the Bulldogs' skill players as they enter The Big House. Fresno State has some of the best offensive talent in the entire Mountain West Conference. The Bulldogs return most of them, including standout quarterback Mikey Keene and stud running back Malik Sherrod, seven of their 10 pass catchers and four starting offensive linemen. Tim Skipper will have his work cut out for him on the defensive side of the ball. The Bulldogs lost their four most valuable defenders after last season, Morice Norris Jr., Levelle Bailey, Carlton Johnson and Kemari Munier-Bailey. They will rely heavily on last season's sixth-leading tackler Devo Bridges and their leading tackler, anchor Malachi Langley. Trends to Watch Michigan’s Defense Against Fresno State’s Passing Attack Michigan's secondary will be under pressure against Fresno State’s high-octane passing attack. The Wolverines' defensive backs will be tested early and that could be an opportune time for Keene to exploit any weaknesses. The Bulldogs like to play fast-paced football. Michigan will need to be prepared to adjust to the Fresno State tempo and control the game in the trenches. Michigan's QB Decision The biggest question circulating around the Maize and Blue has been about the quarterback situation. Depending who we may see taking snaps will ultimately change the offense's dynamic. With the dual-threat athleticism of Alex Orji, we may see more of a run-pass-option (RPO) style attack. Whereas with either Jack Tuttle or Davis Warren, we could see a more traditional pro-style offense. Broadcast Information Date: Aug. 31 Time: 7:30 p.m. EST Where: Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, Mich. • Cornhuskers Set to Hire John Butler as New Secondary Coach

Things happen fast in Lincoln, Neb. On July 5, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that Evan Cooper resigned as the Cornhuskers ' secondary coach and defensive pass game coordinator and that Nebraska was seeking a replacement. On July 6, Thamel reported the Big Red expects to hire former NFL assistant coach John Butler as Cooper's replacement. John Butler's Background Butler has been an assistant coach for the NFL's Buffalo Bills since 2018. In Buffalo, Butler was reunited with his former high school teammate, Sean McDermott. He began as the Bills' secondary coach and became the defensive pass game coordinator in 2022. Before his tenure with the Bills, Butler was on the Houston Texans staff from 2014 until 2017. Before coaching in the NFL, he was a coach at the collegiate level. He is an alumnus of Catholic University in Washington, D.C., where he played on the Cardinal 's Division III football team. He coached at Catholic, then at a series of other universities, including Texas, Midwestern State , Texas State, Harvard, Minnesota, South Carolina and Penn State . Butler brings extensive secondary experience to coach Matt Rhule's Husker staff. His last position in college football was defensive coordinator at Penn State in 2013, where he worked for Bill O'Brien before following him to the Texans. Butler's primary experience as a positional coach is with defensive backs and linebackers. He has also coordinated defenses and coached special teams. He is entering the 29th year of his coaching career. Butler's Fit With the Cornhuskers Nebraska's hire of Butler brings extensive experience to the Conhuskers' coaching staff as the beginning of the season draws near. With his multiple coaching stops in the state of Texas and national recruiting experience, Butler also brings crucial recruiting ties to an area of the country from which the Huskers have historically drawn players. Butler's extensive background in defense makes him an ideal candidate to quickly adapt to defensive coordinator Tony White's unique 3-3-5 system. More information on official hires is inevitable as the season rapidly approaches. Make sure to stay up to date on college football news with College Football Dawgs.

  • Penn State’s Abdul Carter set to change positions in 2024

After losing both Chop Robinson and Adisa Issac to the NFL Draft, Penn State will see an additional change to its front seven before the 2024 season. Junior Abdul Carter is now listed as a defensive end on the Nittany Lions roster after playing his first two seasons as a linebacker (Click for fellow CFD writer Kyle Golik's thoughts). Carter earned first-team All-Big Ten honors after the 2023 season where he recorded 4.5 sacks and 48 tackles. The Philadelphia native tied for second on the team in the sack category behind Issac. Before making his collegiate debut in 2022, Carter was given the prestigious No. 11 becoming the first Penn State linebacker to dawn the number since Micah Parsons. Carter did see some time lined up on the edge during the 2023 season, playing 93 snaps at that position under defensive coordinator Manny Diaz who since took the head coach position at Duke. Now as former Indiana head coach Tom Allen takes over, Carter will look to adjust to a new position as the blue and white prepare for 2024.
